Kissing. Is it a sin? This is a much debated topic in Christiandom. A lot of Christians especially in the Western World take kissing as a normal romantic thing to do in a dating relationship. But. What does the bible say about this?
Kissing in biblical times was not considered a sin. A close look at Romans 16: 16 would reveal that greeting one another with a ‘holy kiss’ was a sign of fellowship in the early church. The same instruction was given in 1 Cor 16:20, 2 Cor 13:12 and 1 Thess 5:36. The emphasis on then kiss being holy means that the kiss given was expected to be chaste and not such as would generate lustful thoughts. The issue of lust would be discussed in the next paragraph.
In the New Testament, Jesus told a crowd that had gathered, “You have heard that it was said to those in ancient times, ‘You shall not commit adultery’. But I say to you, everyone who looks upon a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (Matthew 5: 27 – 28).
The answer is that by biblical standards, kissing really is a sin. How? Why? You may be asking. The plain truth is that the pleasure you derive from kissing is sexual pleasure and kissing itself is a form of foreplay. Therefore, kissing generates lustful thoughts which are akin to committing adultery or fornication with the person with whom you are engaged in the act.Now when we are talking about kissing, we are not talking about a brief beck on the cheek of a brief lip to lip contact. We are taking about intimate kiss usually with the intertwining of tongues. Is this kind of kissing permissible in a relationship?
Although whether or not kissing results in sin would depend on the train of thought of the persons involved, it is best to stay away from it.
One reason for single and dating Christian people to avoid strong romantic kissing is the need to protect their own and the other person’s purity for their (likely) marriage to someone else. The memories made in a relationship that might later be broken up might affect sexual relations with the persons spouse down the road.Sex is sacred. Everything surrounding it is best reserved for marriage so that the sexual act is not besmirched by the guilt of not having saved oneself for marriage.
